Skills Acquisition

Peer education skills & knowledge was acquired by 48 students of Ekwerazu Girls’ Secondary School after participating in the 1-day peer educators’ training session. Participants identified peers as school mates, classmates, friends, e.t.c. Also, they were equipped with Information, Education & Communication materials to break the silence on menstruation & SRH topics in their homes, school and Umuokirika (host community).
Members of the GEMS peer support group at Chidinma Memorial Secondary School have continued to learn and most have become proficient in reusable pad-making. They carried out a step-down training for their peers including new members by organizing a reusable pad-making workshop where girls were grouped in teams of 8. Through information on materials to use and demonstrations, 38 new and existing members as well as 10 non-members engaged in do-it–yourself reusable pad making. Each student acquired hands-on learning and at least 80% demonstrated their new skill by making 1 reusable pad for self-use.

Members of the GEMS support group at Ekwerazu Girls’ Secondary School sustained their learning using the GEMS tool kit and organized a follow-up reusable pad-making training session for new students and a refresher course for existing students. 30 students in attendance were guided on reusable pad-making & grouped to practice their newly acquired skill. Each group produced at least 1 reusable pad.

Reusable pad-making workshop at Knowledge International Secondary School where creative methods was used to show participants step-wise procedure to make reusable pads. Chidera Ogbonna, a student in Senior Secondary class shared her story of change, including how participating in the Do-It-Yourself session helped her to learn how to make a reusable pad and now she discarded all the old rags and cotton wool which she previously used. So far, a total of 289 students have participated in the hands-on learning activity and 20 of the participants signed up for the informed peer educator program. At least 85% demonstrated knowledge gained during the quiz session and showcased their skill by producing at least one reusable pad for self-use.
